Description
A charming tsuba for a tanto. Made of a yellowish copper alloy, it that depicts a hawk on a pine tree, preying over smaller birds. Some details like its beak, claws and the birds are highlighted with gold.
The work is signed 正允, "Masayoshi", a maker I have not been able to find in the standard reference books.
This is a classic design from around the Meiji period (1868-1912) that was made by several makers at the time.
Unusual tsuba with foreign figures and Chinese auspicious symbols.
A masterpiece of the genre. The Yagami school were excellent carvers of iron.
